Cantors

New cantors are always needed (and welcomed!) at the Cathedral. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact the Director of Music at the email or phone number below.

After the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the Church rediscovered the role of the cantor in worship. Because much of Catholic liturgical music is responsorial, a cantor assists at nearly every Mass, Vespers, or other liturgy at the Cathedral. Cantors chant verses of antiphons, the responsorial psalm of the day, and help support the singing of the assembly. The Cathedral’s cantor corps is composed of dedicated volunteers from many walks of life and diverse ages and backgrounds. As required by universal law of the Church, cantors must be Catholics in good standing, though they need not be parishioners. Cantors must audition, should be able to read music, and must commit to at-home rehearsal time. There is always a particular need for cantors for funeral Masses, and opportunities are given for cantors to assist with nuptial Masses as well.
